Landscape Study Kenya

Solo exhibition - part of Copenhagen Photo Festival 2019

The British anthropologist Elizabeth Edwards describes the relationship between the photograpic gaze and its ability to map, control and create a positivist knowledge of both people and places. The land of Kenya has never been a Danish colony, but the African country nevertheless occuipes a significant place in the cultural memory of Danes' as a result of the author Karen Blixen’s stories of her African farm, from the period when the country was part of the British Empire.

This exhibition explores the image of the Kenyan landscape and how these are created through Danish national photo collections from the 20th Century.
Through a playfull reinterpretation of the found material Vestergaard reflects upon Denmark's engagement in the production of colonial visuality, as well as the underlying ideas of land and nature, which the photographs support.

Den britiske visuelle antropolog Elizabeth Edwards beskriver hvordan fotografiet, som barn af moderniteten, har et tæt forhold til kolonialismen i kraft af dets evne til at kortlægge, kontrollere og skabe positivistisk viden om både mennesker og steder. Kenya har aldrig været en dansk koloni, men det afrikanske land fylder i danskernes kulturelle erindring som følge af forfatteren Karen Blixens historier om hendes afrikansk farm, fra perioden hvor landet var en del af det Britiske Imperium.
 
Denne udstilling undersøger hvilke forestillinger om Kenyas landskab, der bliver skabt gennem danske nationale fotosamlinger fra det 20. Århundrede. Via en legende genfortolkning af det fundne materiale reflekterer Vestergaard over Danmarks engagement i den koloniale visualitet, samt de dertilhørende ideer om land og natur, som fotografierne understøtter.
